Energy Psychology - The Missing Link
Energy Psychology is a revolutionary therapy that integrates the use of conventional psychology with techniques that rebalance the vital energy system of the body. It is considered by many conventional mental healthcare practitioners to be the missing link in rapidly restoring patients suffering from many types of emotional distress.
The term "Energy Psychology" first became popularized in the 1980s by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan. Dr. Callahan found that by tapping with 2-3 fingers on specific areas of the body while the patient focused on an emotional/psychological distress, the release of energy blockages was triggered, which in turn freed patients of the distress (including phobias, guilt, anxieties, and painful memories.)
There are two components of Energy Psychology which are used synergistically during a treatment session:
1. Conventionally established psychological principles aimed at thinking about the emotionally distressing issue.
2. The release of blockages in the vital energy system of the body by tapping on specific Acupressure points which correlate to the type of emotional stress experienced.
Energy Psychology techniques are based on the theory that all emotional distress are the result of disturbances within the vital energy flow of the body.
The Human Energy System
The vital energy flow within the body is not a new discovery and has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is a complete system of healthcare dating back over 3,000 years. It embraces several key principles based on the belief that the body, mind, and spirit are one system which is intimately connected to the world in which we live. Vital energy flows throughout all living things, and the balance or imbalance of this energy flow determines our state of health. The goal of TCM is to achieve and maintain a state of balance.
The energy system of the body is considered the blueprint from which the body creates and continually regenerates itself. It is the framework of the body. This energy system is composed of 20 energy meridians throughout the body: 12 main pathways and 8 secondary pathways which form a network of channels.
Each meridian is related to an organ and system of the body. Throughout these meridians there are approximately 2,000 "acupoints" in the body. These points are the locations where the energy of each meridian rises the closest to the surface of the body. If an energy meridian is blocked or congested, the organs and systems related to that meridian will be affected, as well as specific types of emotional distress. By rebalancing the energy flow, this can directly influence our physical, mental, and emotional states.
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses 5 primary methods to stimulate acupoints and correct energetic imbalances within the body:
1. Acupuncture
2. Acupressure
3. Chinese Massage & Manipulation (Tui Na)
4. QiGong
5. Chinese Herbalism
Of these five methods, Energy Psychology uses a modified version of Acupressure during treatment.
How Does Energy Psychology Work?
The Energy Psychologist uses one of several techniques to assess the flow and distribution of vital energy throughout the body. While the patient focuses on a specific emotional distress, the Energy Psychologist simultaneously uses a form of Acupressure called "tapping" on specific acupoints to relieve the energy congestion causing the emotional distress. When the energy flow is reestablished, symptoms of the emotional distress will be come normalized.
Depending on the type of emotional distress (e.g. guilt, phobias, anger, paranoia, or anxiety), a specific number of acupoints are tapped, and in a specific order (called an "algorithm"). The patient is guided to tap each acupoint 3 times while the emotional distress is verbalized.
Sometimes relief is very rapid, and the correcting of the energy imbalance often leads to profound changes. This can occur during or shortly after the treatment.
Common statements include:
"It's difficult for me to focus on the problem any more"
"The problem seems distant to me now"
"I can't seem to focus on the distressing feelings"
"I care about it less now"
"I feel calmer and less afraid"
"I don't feel the same about it any more"
"I see possibilities I didn't see before"
"I can think more clearly and less emotionally"
"I feel more courageous about taking action"
Phobias that have been both chronic and debilitating for many years have spontaneously disappeared during Energy Psychology sessions.
What Quickly Are Results Seen?
The answer depends on the type of problem being treated. Sometimes, significant relief is experienced in just one session. If the problem is based on an event or set of events that are in the past and are no longer ongoing, treatment results are often quite rapid. For more complex issues that are ongoing or reoccur on a regular basis (e.g. trauma experienced in an ongoing relationship, weight loss, and addictions), they may take longer to eliminate and require ongoing "homework" on the part of the patient. Even in these situations, relief will be experienced during treatment sessions.
What Techniques Are Used In Energy Psychology?
During an Energy Psychology session, one or more techniques may be used to determine the cause of energy blockages, and then used to release these blockages and harmonize the energy flow within the body. Use of these techniques vary from Energy Psychologist to Energy Psychologist, and more than one are often combined during a session.
Diagnosing Using Kinesiology
The most common method of diagnosis involves as specialized form of Applied Kinesiology (manual muscle testing). A muscle test in Energy Psychology is conducted by having the patient extend their arm out to the side at shoulder height, parallel to the ground. The Energy Psychologist applies a light, downward pressure to the wrist while asking specific questions. When the patient responds, the arm will either stay rigid and barely move for a true/yes statement, or will yield to pressure and fall for a false/no statement. This is not an indication of the actual "strength" of the muscle, but rather an indication of energetic imbalances within the body.
This method of diagnosis helps the Energy Psychologist determine the root cause of the distress. Often, the patient is unaware of deep-stead emotions as they have entered a state of dissociation. As the body is inherrently truthful, this technique is considered a very powerful method used in Energy Psychology for uncovering what has been buried and yet continues to negatively affect the patient.
Energy Psychology Techniques
Following are the most common techniques used from which several other offshoots have been launched:
Psychological Reversal (PR)
Kinesiology (Muscle Testing)
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET)
Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT)
Be Set Free Fast (BSFF)
There are also various energy therapies that do not integrate the use of psychological processes and are therefore not considered Energy Psychology. These include Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chromatherapy, Reflexology, Reiki, Quantum Touch, Aromatherapy, and various forms of therapeutic touch, etc.
What Conditions Can Energy Psychology Treat?
Energy Psychology is used to treat a wide range of emotional and psychological conditions from acute to chronic, and can also be used to address performance issues. It has been found to be particularly effective in treating:
Addiction/Cravings
Anxiety/Worry/Stress
Allergies/Asthma
Attention Deficit Disorder
Bipolar Disorder
Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome
Depression
Grief and Sadness
Learning Disorders
Low Self-Esteem
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Panic Attacks
Paranoia
Performance Issues (e.g. public speaking)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Recurring Hostility
Self-Sabotage
Trauma
Verbal, Physical or Sexual Abuse
