Methods Used to Select a Remedy
Often, individuals first seek a Bach flower remedy when they have a physical symptom. They often do not relate this symptom to their emotional state and are surprised to learn the importance of understanding the underlying emotional currents which resulted in the physical illness.
With the myriad of teach-yourself-books on the market, many people self prescribe remedies. Each remedy is associated with specific emotional imbalances. Recommendations are selected based on the current emotional state experienced. Remedies are chosen based on one of the following:
1. Short Term Emotional Issues/Acute Issues
This is the most common method of choosing remedies and is used to address less serious situations which are common occurrences through life (work stress, doctor appointments, job interviews, arguments and misunderstandings with people around us, passing moods, etc). To address passing moods, it is important to become self-aware to correctly identify the true nature of of the feelings being experienced and where they stem from (for example, unhappiness can be the result of underlying emotions such as anger, loneliness, or guilt). Spending time to understand the underlying emotions will assist in choosing the correct flower remedies.
2. Character/Personality Type Remedies
Remedies may also be selected based on personality types or negative behavioral patterns. Sometimes, character traits may surface which are atypical and which are transient depending on current life circumstances. For example, an individual experiencing resentment and bitterness about current misfortunes may choose the Willow remedy until these feelings are transformed and released.
3. Chronic Physical/Emotional Issues
When we experience emotional or physical trauma, we can begin to feel helpless and out of control. This often results in other negative emotions which then begin to compound themselves in a ripple effect. We are often unable to think clearly and may develop unhealthy habits to deal with our situation. As these negative emotions build up, physical illness often results, which may then become chronic. For example, anxiety unchecked can lead to phobias, and phobias can then affect how we interact with others and the world around us. Anger can lead to suppression, which can cause us to become a ticking time bomb.
When selecting a remedy for chronic conditions, a remedy is chosen based on the current emotional state. As the remedy takes effect and other deeper emotions being to surface, these new emotions should then be reassessed and treated with the remedy or remedy combination appropriate for these new emotions. This process continues until the emotional root causes are found and treated. As this process of unfolding can be difficult to understand and diagnose, a Bach Flower Remedy practitioner can assist with helping to uncover underlying currents and root causes.
