Chiropractic as a Career

Salary
Chiropractic salaries vary according to whether you have your own business or work for a small practice or medical office. Some chiropractors work from home or at the patient's home. Salaries also vary according to how many treatments are conducted each week.

Chiropractors work, on average, about 30-40 hours per week. In 2005, the mean salary for chiropractors was $104,363, (Source: Chiropractic Economics magazine). Median annual earnings of salaried chiropractors were $65,220 in 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $45,710 and $96,500 a year. (Source: U. S. Department of Labor). In Europe, a new graduate can expect a salary of approximately €50,000.

In Chiropractic, as in other types of independent medical and alternative health practices, earnings are relatively low in the beginning and increase as the practice grows. Geographic location, qualifications, and referrals will also influence earnings. Another thing to consider is that self-employed chiropractors must provide their own health insurance.

Rates received for sessions typically range from $40 to $100, all of which is profit in a private practice (minus supplies and taxes).

Average Length of Study
Chiropractic courses are very intense, with students completing pre-clinical sciences to the same degree as medical students. Chiropractors must be licensed, requiring 2 to 4 years of undergraduate education, the completion of a 4-year Chiropractic college course, and passing scores on national and State examinations within the U. S.

Average Tuition
Chiropractic tuition is now comparable to traditional public-supported medical school tuition, with the average cost of attending accredited Chiropractic education institutions ranging from $75,000-$110,000. Full or partial academic scholarship and grants are offered by some of these institutions.
