Chiropractic vs. Osteopathy
Historically, these two schools of thought emerged separately within the United States at the end of the nineteenth century, with Chiropractic and Osteopathy similarities outweighing the differences. Chiropractic has gained more popularity in recent years, largely due to more active advertising and publicity, and the number of Chiropractic offices. Osteopaths tend to be more conservative in self promotion.
Osteopathy was brought to public attention in 1872 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), an American doctor who grew disillusioned with orthodox medicine after his wife and three children died from spinal meningitis. Today, Still is considered the Father of Osteopathy. Popular belief is held that one of Dr. Still's early students was Daniel David Palmer, who founded Chiropractic in 1895.
The most significant difference between Chiropractic and Osteopathy is that many osteopaths become Primary Care Physicans and undergo training and education similar to a Physician (including performing minor surgeries, administering vaccines, etc.). Physical manipulation is an elective, and many osteopaths do not perform adjustments, or perform them rarely. In comparison, the focus of Chiropractic education and training primarily involves manipulation. Chiropractors are trained to take and interpret x-rays whereas osteopaths are not and use individual interpretation.
Certain techniques practiced in Chiropractic are not practiced in Osteopathy, and vice versa. For example, osteopaths use a technique known as cranial osteopathy, or Craniosacral Therapy (CST)A holistic healing practice that uses very light touching to balance the craniosacral system in the body, which includes the bones, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues of the cranium and spinal area.. There are some therapists known as Craniosacral Therapists who may or may not have an osteopathic background. Chiropractors use a technique called Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT)
A method of normalizing the relationship between the tail of the spine and top of the spine., which is not practiced by osteopaths. Many of the treatment methods used by osteopaths and chiropractors are similar to techniques used by those physiotherapists that have undertaken additional training in manipulative therapy.
