Reflexology as a Career
Careers in Reflexology have been gaining popularity since the 1980s. Although it is considered a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)testtest, medical research shows that Reflexology can be very effective in reducing symptoms of many illnesses, especially stress-related conditions.
The beauty of Reflexology is that it can also be incorporated to compliment many other healing therapies. Massage therapists, aestheticians, cosmetologists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and a variety of other alternative healthcare practitioners include Reflexology in their services.
Reflexologists may practice out of their homes, or travel to their client's homes, work in a salon, spa, fitness center, medical office, or chiropractic office. Such flexibility offers great appeal. Very little equipment is needed and many reflexologists practice with their clients lying on an ergonomic massage chair or table, usually with their feet slightly elevated on a cushion or foam pad.
Reflexology Certification & Licensing
With variances from country to country, you will need to research specific certification and licensing requirements for your area. In the United States, you will need to research the specific requirements of your state, city or county in which you will be practicing Reflexology. The Reflexology Association of America offers a summary of state and laws and regulations for Reflexology practitioners. Reflexology schools in your area should also be able to provide you with the most recent update on such reguations.
Some states require reflexologists to be licensed massage therapists. Other states with massage laws make an exemption for Reflexology. In at least two states (Missouri and Louisiana) Reflexology is regulated under the cosmetology law. In some other states, there is no massage or reflexology law at all.
At the time of this writing, only two states (North Dakota and Tennessee) have specific laws governing the licensing or registration of reflexologists.
Many reflexologists in the U. S. acquire the American Reflexology Certification Board (ARCB) certification. This well-recognized certification involves passing the three-part ARCB examination (written, practical and documentation) and demonstrates that the practitioner meet national standards for skill and knowledge in the field of Reflexology. It requires 110 hours of training from an accredited institution or instructor in:
| • Anatomy and physiology | • 100 hours of hands on supervised work |
| • Understanding the body's systems | • Passing a national board test |
| • Reflexology history | • Completion of a practicum |
| • Reflexology theory and practices | • 90 documentation of case studies |
| • Busness and professional ethics |
There is also a code of conduct and standardized care associated with national certification. In order to maintain certification, reflexologists must also qualify annually and support their certification with continuing education courses.
In addition, instructors of reflexology must be accredited by the American Commission for Accreditation of Reflexology Education and Training, which measures their ability to meet national, professional standards.
