Reflexology as a Career
Salary
No studies on the earnings of reflexologists have been conducted to date, but salaries are similar to those of massage therapists, especially considering the strong connection between massage and Reflexology. The fees you charge for Reflexology will depend on where you live, whether you work out of your own home or out of your clients home, a medical spa, or have an office, and how many sessions you conduct per week.
The typical hourly rate for a Reflexology session varies between $30-$100. If you are working independently and using a room within a spa or similar facility, a percentage of the hourly fee may be taken. If you work as an employee, you will typically be paid a flat fee for each session, ranging from $20 and up per hour, plus tips. If you are in a private practice, all profits are yours (minus taxes and any expenses).
Most reflexologists do not perform 40 hours of Reflexology per week, more often delivering 10-25 hours or more. As you build your clientele, many will visit regularly for treatment and/or maintenance which will assist in predicting income from month to month. Offering referral discounts will also assist in expanding your clientele and spreading the word on your services.
Average Length of Study
Professional Reflexology certification programs typically range between 150 and 300 hours, which may or may not include documented practice hours. The length of time to complete the program is dependent on the pace at which you undertake the study and can range from several months to a year or longer. Distance learning programs are also available, though there is no substitute for hands-on practice under supervision.
Individuals who currently practice other healing modalities, such as massage, acupuncture, or acupressure, may not opt for the certification and simply choose to enhance the offering of their services by taking a short course.
Average Tuition
A full certification program will cost approximately $1,500 to $3,500, not including any supplies need (e.g. massage table or chair). Per hour, Reflexology training typically averages $15.
