Reflexology

How Does Reflexology Work?

It is still not yet completely understood how Reflexology works, although reflexologists believe that the therapy works primarily by:

  • Stimulating the nervous system to relieve a variety of problems
  • Improving circulation and lymph flow
  • Balancing the flow of vital energy throughout the body, encouraging the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance
  • Releasing toxins to cleanse the body of impurities
  • Reducing stress and inducing deep relaxation
In Reflexology, energy travels from the feet to the spine, and from the hands to the spine.  Reflexology stimulates the sensory receptors in the nerve fibers of the feet and hands and produces energy that branches to the spinal cord, where it is then dispersed to the appropriate region of the body requiring treatment. Reflexology stimulates the internal organs to help restore bodily functions to normal.

The hands and feet are reflexive, meaning that they automatically respond to stimulus via pressure sensors on different areas. When an area or organ of the body is not functioning efficiently, it can be reflected as a pain or tenderness on the corresponding reflex point on the hands or feet.  This can also be diagnosed by uric acid crystals (tiny crystal-type deposits that can be felt under the surface of the skin).  Pressure is applied to these reflex points, and these crystal-type deposits broken down to heal the afflicted area of the body.

Reflexology also relaxes the body and reduces constriction of blood vessels, thereby stimulating and improving circulation.
