Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is based on the principle that the entire body is mapped out on the hands an feet. There are areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body.  By applying pressure with finger and hand techniques to specific points on these areas, reflexologists produce a therapeutic effect in the body. Some reflexologists also believe that the points on various locations of the ears also related to regions of the body.

On the feet alone, there are over 7,000 nerve endings (also called “reflex points”).  No oils or lotions are used by the reflexologist. Pressure sensors in both the hands and feet are a part of the body's reflex response that makes the "fight or flight" reaction possible. Hands and feet ready the body to fight by communicating with the body's internal organs via an adrenal surge. Reflexology uses this reflex network, to which the organs are inextricably tied.

For example, there are reflex points in the little toe which relate to the neck and ears. When these points are stimulated, a corresponding effect is felt in these bodily regions.

Reflexology is considered a serious advance in the health field, and is often confused with massage.  It is a less intrusive treatment as Reflexology is carried out on the hands and feet alone.  It is considered one of the most deeply relaxing forms of healing that can be practiced.  The National Association for Reflexology in America remarks that it is a “non-invasive, integrative and complementary therapy that benefits all.”

The relationship between the hands and feet as they correspond to the internal organs has been heavily researched with proven results by many.
