Reiki as a Career

Reiki, like many other healing professions, provides great career flexibility. Practitioners may choose to work within a medical office, in their home, or travel to the home of the client. Many practitioners view Reiki not simply as a career, but as a spiritual path.

Reiki is a very simple technique to learn for people of all ages, including children and the elderly. To become a Reiki practitioner, you must first establish an open connection (or “attunement”) to the universal life energy. This is done by a Reiki Master who channels energy into the student and “attunes” the student to this ability. Reiki symbols and mantras are also taught.

Reiki Certification & Licensing
Except in Florida where a Reiki practitioner must be a licensed massage therapist to practice professionally, there is no formal regulation or governing body for the practice of Reiki. Various professional organizations and networks have developed in an attempt to establish consistency. As training varies considerably from Reiki Master to Reiki Master, it is important that any prospective student perform due diligence when selecting a teacher. As well as traditional Reiki, other Reiki systems have emerged, including Multi-Dimensional Reiki, Lightarian Reiki®, Urevia®, Shamballa and Karuna. The practice of traditional Reiki requires a teacher which can trace their lineage back to the work of Hawato Takata.

Within Reiki, there are three degrees of attunement (also known as “levels”):

Reiki Degree I: Students take a weekend course, typically spanning 2 days. Here, they learn the guidelines and are taught to become aware of the natural flow of universal energy. A Reiki Master then performs an attunement on the student, which triggers the conscious ability of the student to channel energy to others for healing. Handbooks are often included, and a certificate awarded upon completion.

Reiki Degree II: Students take a 1-2 day course and must have completed Reiki Degree 1. It is also strongly advised that the student have practiced Reiki for at least 1-2 months on themselves and others before progressing to this degree. Here, students learn how to intensify and focus the energy flow, deal with deep seated emotional issues, learn the Tibetan symbols and mantras used, and learn distance-healing techniques. A certificate is awarded upon completion.

Reiki Degree III: Also known as the achievement of Reiki Master. The student must have completed both Reiki Degrees I and II. The ability to attune others, as well as effective methods of training other students are learned. Many Reiki Degree III training courses require an extended apprenticeship with a Reiki Master of up to one year as the student refines their ability to heal. There are, however, some Reiki Masters who offer Reiki Degree III training spanning a much shorter period period of time.

Salary
Although we are unaware of any studies completed on the earnings of Reiki practitioners, the fees charged will depend on where you live, whether you work out of a medical office/spa, from your own home, travel to your clients home, have your own office, and how many treatments you conduct per week.

Some practitioners have their own business or work for a small practice, some work in tandem with other alternative healers, medicine practitioners, chiropractors or medical offices. Rates received for an hourly session typically range from $50 to over $100 which is all profit in a private practice (minus supplies and taxes). If the practitioner progresses to the Mastery level of training, there is more potential for income through teaching and lecturing.
