What is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural, non-invasive and gentle form of healing which is practiced worldwide and which is often used in conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques. It is currently incorporated into various healthcare facilities and hospital and has proven effective in treating a variety of illnesses ranging from stress, anxiety, skin problems, broken bones, headaches, insomnia, etc. to more serious problems such as multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and cancer.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Reiki practitioners channel life force energy through their hands using a series of hand placements on or above the client's fully clothed body. Several of these hand placements target the seven main chakras (energy centers) of the body which may be dysfunctional, discolored, partially, or completely closed. Keeping these energy centers properly functioning is vitally important to health, as disruptions in energy flow lead to illness. The energy channeled by the Reiki practitioner is used to strengthen the energy flowing in the client and stimulate healing. Reiki helps to bring the mind, body and spirit into harmonious balance, working to encourage healing on all levels. Many practitioners find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with a sense of spirituality previously not experienced.
Life force energy, also known as “qi” in Japan, “chi” in China, and "prana" in India, is the energy that animates all life. This life force energy flows through all living things including plants, animals and humans. When a person's life force energy is in balance, they will feel healthy, strong and confident. Energy flows strongly or weakly depending on the quality of thoughts and emotions. Fear-based thoughts and emotions such as anger, guilt, jealousy, violence, and frustration cause a disruption in the energy flow and create an imbalance which may later result in physical illness. Reiki vitalizes life force energy and balances this energy within the body. Western medicine is now beginning to recognize the role of the mind in creating and perpetuating illness.
Reiki is administered by a Reiki practitioner (who may also be a Reiki Master). Some practitioners may use a combination of meditating on ancient Tibetan symbols, crystal grids, and various hand positions to channel energy into the client. Since a disease or disorder in one area of the body will inevitably affect the whole body on an energetic level, the use of Reiki is often applied to the entire body to cleanse and revitalize the system as a whole..
In Reiki, the energy flows where it is needed within the client, and the healing conditions necessary are naturally created by the client. The practitioner does not need to “know” how to heal the illness, but rather focuses on providing energy to the client and amplifying the client’s own energy. Healing of the imbalance then becomes automatic.
Reiki practitioners may also perform distance healing, in which both the practitioner and client select an appointed time and the client relaxes while the practitioner focuses on directing energy for healing.
Types of Reiki
In recent years, several other energy systems have emerged which are similar, yet have some variance from traditional Reiki.
Traditional Reiki requires learning from a teacher who is directly in the Reiki lineage (which means that the Reiki practitioner must be able to trace the teaching of their instructor back to Hawayo Takatatesttest). Examples of other forms of Reiki include Multi-Dimensional Reiki, Lightarian Reiki®, Urevia®, Shamballa, and Karuna.
