What Can I Expect During a Treatment?
Reiki is both powerful and gentle. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance and has many benefits for both client and practitioner, often including altered states of consciousness and spiritual experiences for both.
If a client has a health condition and wants to be treated with Reiki, the condition will be discussed, as well as any emotional issues the client is experiencing. Issues with the home and work life and any surrounding emotional turbulence will also typically be discussed. If the client is receiving medical treatment or undergoing medication, this should also be discussed as Reiki will often improve the results of all medical treatments, acting to reduce negative side effects, shorten healing time, reduce or eliminate pain, reduce stress, and increase vitality. Clients will likely be asked not to consume a heavy meal before the session as more energy within the body will be focused on digestion.
Reiki does not require the removal of any clothing, though some practitioners may ask for jewelry to be removed, especially those containing precious or semi-precious stones. These practitioners feel that such jewelry will affect the energies being channeled. The client will be asked to either sit in a comfortable, ergonomic chair, or lie on a comfortable surface such as a massage bed. To assisting in creating a relaxed and soothing atmosphere, often soft music is played and the lights are dimmed. Before commencing a regime for whole-body treatment, many practitioners undertake a particular routine, some more ritualized and ceremonious than others. This may involve prayer, the asking for guidance, and/or meditation. There is great scope for variation in the number and sequence of hand positions used for whole-body treatment. The hand positions depend greatly upon the practitioner and what is felt to be best for the recipient, but no one sequence is considered best one for all. Although there are positions in which the practitioner hands are in direct contact with the patient (such as cradling the head), many positions do not involve actual touching. The practitioner may hold their hands a few inches or farther away from the patient's body and manipulate the energy field from there. The location of the hand positions correspond to the location of the body’s endocrine system and 7 major chakras.
Traditionally, many Reiki practitioners will give the whole body treatment, covering all hand positions. This approach gives a very good overall healing effect and is especially useful if there is doubt as to the cause of the problem being treated. With increased practice, many Reiki practitioners begin relying on their intuition for hand guidance.
During the session, the practitioner will begin the flow of energy through their hands and transfer it into the client’s body by gently placing their hands either on or several inches above the various bodily areas.
A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on what is required. There is no pressure on the body, making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. The practitioner channels the energy flow to the body of the client, which then intuitively responds and guides the energy to wherever it is required.
It is common to feel warm, tingling sensations during the treatment. Some may feel waves of energy or high pitched vibrations. Others may feel nothing; however, most clients report that receiving Reiki is an extremely relaxing and soothing experience.
