Stanford Engineer and motivational speaker Gary Craig realized that the quality of life was directly related to emotional health. Based on this realization, he also felt that emotional health was the foundation beneath self confidence and that self confidence was the springboard to achievement in everywalk of life.
In an effort to explore methods on how to restore individuals to a state of emotional health, he then embarked on a journey to find answers and a set of tools which could help people resolve psychological and emotional distress. In his earlier years for personal improvement tools, Gary considered a degree in Psychology, but the more he was exposed to that field, the more he concluded that conventional mental health therapies fell short. Some people underwent therapy for months or years for relief from their fears, anger, guilt, grief, depression, traumatic memories, etc. and make little or no headway. In his search for answers, he studied books and tapes, attended seminars, and talked to Psychologists, Psychiatrists and behavioral therapists of every kind to see what worked.
Gary discovered Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), becoming very proficient and receiving certification as a Master Practitioner. He used this technique to help many people. He then heard about a Psychologist name Dr. Roger Callahan in Southern California who had discovered a breakthrough technique in psychology, After learning of Dr. Callahan's Thought Field Therapy (TFT) method (see above), Gary was intrigued and purchased the videos and training documentation. He saw results such as he'd never seen before using any other technique. The engineer in Gary then took over and he began to work on a a simpler and more easy to learn version of TFT which he named the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Although both EFT and TFT are very similar, there are two big differences
| In TFT, challenges have their own unique algorithm or set of algorithms. Significant emphasis is placed on tapping on specific acupoints for a particular emotional challenge (e.g. anger) and only in a specific sequence (order). Each sequence is likened to “a code that opens a combination lock.” | |
| In EFT, the sequence is considered unimportant, only the tapping itself. You tap on the same set of acupoints (or a sub-set of these points) regardless of the emotional challenge being worked on. This is usually repeated in the same sequence simply to make it easy to remember - it can actually be done in any order. If all the acupoints points are tapped on, then acupoints relevant to the current problem/emotion get tapped on by default. |
TFT is considerd a little more complex because of the multiple tapping sequences which need to be learned for different challenges. This can make it harder to both learn and remember than EFT. TFT also requires more skill to apply as there are over 20 emotional challenges to choose from (as taught in the TFT training curriculum). The specified acupoints must be tapped in a given sequence unless the advanced training part of the TFT curriculum has been studied, which can be very expensive (in excess of $100,000).
For feelings and emotions which do not have sequence assigned to them, the TFT practitioner would present a series of questions to the patient to decide which sequences would be appropriate. This can make TFT a little more challenging to apply and self-apply TFT.
EFT is relatively easy to learn and self-apply. The website offers a free download to learn the basic method, called "The Basic Recipe," and also offers training DVDs ranging from $150-$210.
