Kinesiology (muscle testing)
Kinesiology is also commonly known as muscle testing and is the relationship between muscle movement and the systems within the body.
Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) was first developed by physical therapists Florence and Henry Kendall to test the function and strength of systems of the body. Muscle testing is a generic term used for assessing a person’s symptoms and issues by means of indicator muscles. In 1964, Dr. Goodheart, a Chiropractor from Detroit, MI began experimenting with MMT and for the treatment methods that could improve muscle strength, and also use muscle strength as an indicator of health. He discovered many factors, physical, emotional and mental, that could positively or negatively affect muscle strength. He named this discovery "Applied Kinesiology", customized discipline of Kinesiology (the study of the motion, movement and functions of the musclular system). While studying Chinese medicine, Goodheart discovered that it was possible to substitute pressure for needles in touching to acupuncture points, as well as tapping on the points. By bringing knowledge of muscle testing to the arena, Goodheart and his colleagues discovered a relationship between the various muscles and the meridian pathways outlined in Chinese medicine.
Using this unique form of Kinesiology in Energy Psychology, the flow of energy within the body can be determined by testing the function of the muscles while asking a question or series of question.
A muscle test in Energy Psychology is conducted by having the patient resist using a target muscle or muscle groups, for example the arm. The arm is extended to the side at shoulder height, parallel to the ground. The Energy Psychologist applies a light, downward pressure to the arm while asking specific questions.
The arm will either give a strong response (i.e. stay rigid and barely move) or a weak response (i.e. give in to pressure and fall). This is not an indication of the actual "strength" of the muscle, but rather an indication of energetic imbalances within the body. Muscle feedback causes the arm to either give a true or false answer by either holding strong or by yielding to pressure placed on it. This helps the energy psychologist determine negative belief systems which can sometimes by buried in the unconscious.
The responses of the body are often startling to the patient who has no physical control over the answers which the body gives. Once the Energy Psychologist has discovered the underlying imbalance using muscle testing, other techniques are then combined to normalize the energy flow and restore the body to balance.
