Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
Thought Field Therapy, or TFT, was developed by American Psychologist, Dr. Roger Callahan, Ph.D. in 1981. Dr. Callahan had been studying the energy system of the body and decided to step outside the normal "boundaries" of Psychotherapy. He discovered that by "tapping" certain energy meridian points (acupoints) on the body, distressing emotions could be neutralized. After significant research and experimentation, Dr. Callahan discovered that emotional stress stemmed from blockages in the energy flow of the body, and that these blockages could be released by "tapping" on specific acupoints with 2-3 fingers, thereby freeing the person of the distressing emotion.
The theory behind TFT is that precisely encoded information within negative emotions are contained within the thought field, which then become activated whenever a person thinks about a problem. This encoded information is the root cause of negative emotions and corresponds to an acupoint on the body. In order to eliminate the negative emotion, a precise sequence of acupoints are tapped in a specific order to unblock the flow of energy.
There are three steps involved during a TFT session,
1. the Energy Psychologist asks the patient to rate their emotional problem on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being the most intense stress.
2. The patient is then guided to tap on specific acupoints on their own body, in a step-by-step sequence known as an "algorithm."
3. Following this treatment, the patient is again asked to assess the problem on a scale from 1-10. The emotional charge should be considerably lessened or "dulled."
The treatment lasts only a few minutes and can be repeated, depending on the level of stress still remaining. TFT can relieve practically any emotional distress including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addictions, phobias, fears, depression, guilt, anger, grief, and anxieties by directly treating the blockage in the energy flow which perpetuate the disturbing thought pattern.
Training for Dr. Callahan's Though Field Therapy ranges from $145 to $280. The algorithms are taught during training to learn which acupoints to tap and in which order. Training is also offer for "voice technology" which involves analyzing the voice of the patient to determine what points on the body the patient should tap on themselves for treatment.
To date, the training has been restricted to licensed or certified mental health specalists, medical professionals, Social Workers, Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists, or Homeopathic Physicians. Training for the voice technolgy is expensive, in excess of $100,000.
