What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage, also commonly known as sports therapy massage, is a massage therapy that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and connective tissue.

Deep tissue massage is used in the recovery of muscle fatigue, to release chronic muscle tension in the body, the treatment of soft tissue injuries, and to enhance muscle performance in sports. Deep tissue massage relaxes tightened and restricted movement, thereby improving flexibility and range of movement. This will help with repetitive strain injuries such as tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and stiumulate blood and oxygen circulation.

Because many toxins are released, it is especially important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body. Knots and tension that have built up over a period of time may often require regular sessions of massage, as well as changes in posture and self-care exercises.

Deep tissue massage also helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

What Should I Expect?

The massage strokes used are similar to that of Swedish massage, but with a slower and more direct, deeper pressure on specific areas of the body that need attention. It can also be applied to the entire body. Sometimes, the pressure can be rather uncomfortable as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or break up "knots." Let the therapist know if the pressure is too much for you. The pressure focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly you should feel better within a day or two.
