Naturopathy as a Career
Licensing requirements do not apply to Naturopathic Doctors practicing in as yet unlicensed states and provinces.
In the United Kingdom, the General Council and Register of Naturopaths establishes standards of education for Naturopaths and accredits organizations which meet these standards. Although not a government body, the standards are considered high, with the completion of 3-4 year degrees required to become a member of the register.
Salary
There exists a very wide income range among practicing Naturopathic Doctors. (It isimportant to note that many Naturopathic Doctors are not salaried, but rather are self-employed.) On average, industry data shows that an established Naturopathic Doctor who runs or partners in a large, busy practice makes an average estimated net income of $80,000 to $90,000 per year, some of which earn upwards of $200,000. A beginning Naturopathic Doctor just starting up his or her practice, working part-time or building a staff, generally earns much less than these averages for the first few years of practice. Early residency positions reflect incomes averaging $30,000 per year.
Salaries vary greatly depending on several factors, including region and location, type of clientele served, fee schedules, business objectives and marketing plans, and willingness to work with insurance carriers (source: Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges).
Average Length of Study
A Naturopathic Doctor licensed in the U. S. or Canada attends a 4 year Naturopathic medical school. Medical Doctors who choose to extend their studies into Naturopathic Medicine are required to also complete 4 years of additional education in Naturopathy (in the U. K., the length of time may be shorter).
Average Tuition
Base annual tuition from accredited colleges within the U. S. and Canada is approximately $20,000/year. Non-accredited financial institutions also offer courses, some of which are substantially cheaper. Some of these courses may be questionable as they are extremely short in comparison with formal study courses and do not verify clinical experience.
