What is Naturopathy?
2. First, do no harm
Using non-invasive, non-toxic treatments, and the most natural therapies which minimize the risks of the potentially damaging side effects of some conventional therapies and medications
3. Identify and treat the cause
Locating and treating the root cause of the illness, rather than the symptoms only
4. Treat the whole person
Treating the person from a holistic perspective, taking into account the physical, emotional, psychological, dietary, genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and other factors
5. Preventative medicine
Teaching principles of healthy living to prevent illness, and to prevent minor illnesses from becoming chronic or degenerative
6. Doctor as teacher
Teaching patients the principles of healthy living and the steps required to achieve and maintain health
An example of a Naturopathic approach to illness is the treatment of a fever. Often, a fever is the body’s response to removing bacteria which will not survive at higher temperatures. Depending on the conditions, a Naturopathic Doctor may recommend leaving the fever uninhibited to naturally run its course. The traditional approach to fever management for many parents, however, is to react with fear, medicating the fever with over-the-counter medicines. Many of these medicines dampen the immune system and can actually cause the sickness to become more prolonged.
