Naturopathic Treatments
5. Botanical Medicine
Naturopaths used herbs similarly to the way conventional Medical Doctors use conventional medicines. Although herbal constituentstesttest are used in many conventional medicines, the manner in which they are used in Naturopathy differs. With conventional medicine, often a medication is given to counteract the effect of an illness rather than to address the actual cause of the illness. For example, a patient with high blood pressure may be prescribed a medication to lower the blood pressure and which will often be required for the rest of the patients' life. Many such medications have side effects. A Naturopath will focus on finding and addressing the underlying issue which results in high blood pressure, not just in the relief of the symptom.
6. Traditional Chinese MedicineThe fundamental principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are a foundation for NaturopathicMedicine. TCM encompasses five healing methods: Acupuncture, acupressure, QiGong, massage and herbalism. Many Naturopaths become licensed and trained in these methods and incorporate them into their Naturopathic treatments.
7. Midwivery/Natural Childbirth
Some Naturopathic Doctors are trained in natural childbirth, which focuses on:
- non-invasive and medication-free techniques
- healthy diet and appropriate nutrients during the course of the pregnancy
- counseling to ensure a positive emotional state during pregnancy and labor
- Homeopathic remedies during pregnancy and labor
8. Lifestyle and Psychological Counseling
From a Naturopathic perspective, emotional and psychological stability is extremely important and can be the root cause of an illness, aggravate an illness, and also dampen the immune system which affects the patient’s ability to heal themselves. Common treatments include counseling, guided imagery, positive thinking, and hypnosis.
9. Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, disease occurs when a body falls out of harmony with the universe. Many Naturopathic Doctors have incorporated Ayurveda into their healing treatments. The founding principle of Ayurveda is to prevent illness by maintaining balance within the body, mind, and spirit. This is done by adjusting the general lifestyle, diet, activity levels, stress levels, and other lifestyle factors which create imbalance.
10. Therapeutic Manipulation
Some Naturopaths utilize manipulation therapy as a treatment. Similar to chiropractors, osteopathic physicians and other healthcare practices, manipulative therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissue and the realignment of skeletal bones such as the spinal vertebrae, bones and joints. Realignment of bones can cause immediate relief of sometimes severe pain.
