Acupressure

What Are the Benefits?

Is Acupressure Safe for Children?
Being such a non-invasive healing method, Acupressure can be used for a variety of symptoms with children, including motion sickness, fever, respiratory, and digestive issues.

Reduction of nausea can be of great benefit in assisting with postoperative vomiting common in young children.

As self-practitioners, children have a natural talent for Acupressure, having little difficulty in accepting its effectiveness and in also visualizing the flow of energy throughout the body.

Is Acupressure Safe During Pregnancy?

Acupressure can be used throughout pregnancy to relieve many discomforts and painful conditions. Various acupoints can be used for relief from nausea, backache, joint pain, heartburn, and high blood pressure. Extreme care should be taken, however, with the abdominal area and certain points on the legs.

Acupressure can be used to promote the release of endorphins (a painkiller naturally produced by the body) to relieve back pain and labor pains. Treating specific acupoints during labor can help to dilate the cervix and increase the efficiency of contractions. Because of the potential for this kind of response, it is important that certain acupoints not be stimulated before the pregnancy due date in the event of triggering premature labor. It is said to be more beneficial if the appropriate acupoints are stimulated at the onset of labor before labor pains actually begins as compared to during labor.

During the third trimester, Acupressure can also be used for breech birth (the technique is typically used 32-34 weeks into the pregnancy, as past the 36th week there is usually not enough room for the rotation of the fetus). It is typically applied up to twice a day for up to 10 days, though most babies turn within 3 days. Once turned into the appropriate headfirst position, patients should stop using the technique, as it may cause the baby to turn back to the breech position.

There are also acupoints used to stimulate lactation.
