Acupressure as a Career

Salary
No studies on the earnings of Acupressure practitioners have been conducted to date. Salaries can vary greatly due to location, industry, and experience. The fees charged for Acupressure will depend on where you live, whether you work out of your own home or out of your clients home, or have an office, work out of a spa or medical office, and how many sessions you conduct per week.

The typical hourly rate for Acupressure sessions varies between $40-$100. If you are working independently and using a room within a medical office or similar facility, a percentage of the hourly fee may be taken. If you work as an employee, you will typically be paid a flat fee for each session, ranging from $20 and up per hour. If you are in a private practice, all profits are yours (minus taxes and any expenses).

Being that it is unrealistic to perform 40 hours of Acupressure therapy per week, many healing practitioners combine Acupressure with other complimentary healing modalities such as Reiki, massage, and sometimes Acupuncture, which expands their service offering and range of clientele.

As you build your clientele, many will visit regularly both for preventative maintenance and for the treatment of specific issues. This will assist in the prediction of income from month to month. Offering referral discounts will assist in expanding clientele and spreading the word on your services.

Average Length of Study
Basic and advanced training programs in Acupressure run from 100-200 hours. Professional Oriental Medicine certification programs at the Masters level vary in length depending on the school. Certification in Asian Bodywork Therapy from the Americanl Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA) requires the completion of 500 hours at a school which is accredited by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Note that schools offering a Masters course in Oriental Medicine often require significantly more hours to be completed before certification is achieved (up to 850 hours or more). The length of time to complete certifications is dependent often on the pace at which you undertake the study and can range from several months to a year or longer.

Average Tuition
A diploma or certification program in Oriental Medicine, which includes Acupressure, can cost in excess of $10,000.  Certifications of shorter duration are completed on an hourly basis or in the format of a structured course and can vary greatly depending on the school.
