What Can I Expect During a Treatment?
Experiencing an Acupressure treatment is very relaxing. The treatment will take place in a private room, which may provide a very relaxing and comforting ambience, such as soft colors, dim lights and meditative music. Acupressure can be performed sitting, standing, or lying down. Light and comfortable clothing may be worn unless the practitioner is also providing massage, in which case it may be performed directly on the skin. It is strongly advised not to eat a large meal 1-2 hours before treatment as energy will be diverted into the assimilation of food. Acupressure may also be performed by an acupuncturist, reflexologist, or Reiki practitioner, as similar principles of energy healing applies.
The treatment will begin with an assessment which will include a discussion on any illnesses, symptoms, and emotional distress the client may be experiencing.
Traditionally, the tool of the practitioner is the hands. The balls of the thumbs, fingers and palms are used, and occasionally, the elbows. Sometimes the nail edge is used, which should be smooth and clean. Techniques such as rubbing, kneading, and vibration may be used, depending on the acupressure point (acupoint). There is a correct technique for both locating each acupoint and applying the appropriate amount of pressure. Generally, Acupressure is applied from the top of the body to the bottom, and from the front to the back.Using tip of the index or middle finger and thumb, the practitioner locates the acupoint(s) correspoinding to the symptoms experienced by the client. The sensation experienced at each acupoint may vary considerably. There is usually a slight sensitivity or “charge” felt at the location of the acupoint, and depending on the condition, the acupoint itself may sore or tender. Pressure is applied in the direction of the energy flow within the energy meridian that the acupoint is located. Occasionally, pressure is applied perpendicular or opposite to the energy flow if a calming or sedating effect is required. The amount of pressure applied and length of time it is continued varies from acupoint to acupoint, and can range from a few seconds to up to 2 minutes. The pressure on an acupoint is firm and direct (or may be more gentle for the treatment of the elderly, infants, or depending on the condition). It may be applied with sustained pressure, or pressure that is increased over a span of 20-30 seconds, held steadily, and then gradually decreased. Acupoints may also be stimulated by small, circular movements.
A strong sensation at an acupoint is usually a sign of energy excess, whereas little or no sensation may indicate energy depletion or sluggishness. Energy deficiency results in conditions characterized by feelings of weakness and tiredness. Energy excess or depletion can be caused by many things, including lifestyle habits, stress, poor diet, and faulty posture. Sensitivity at specific acupoints may also vary depending on weather conditions or menstrual cycle.
When pressure is applied to an acupoint, a sensation similar to an electrical “charge” or sharp twinge may be felt, followed by a tingling or numbing sensation which may peak, and then fade as the acupoint stimulation continues. As the energy is stimulated, heat may also be emitted. When pressure is applied to a point related to a tense or spasmed muscle, the client will feel a “good ache” which will gradually diminish and be replaced by a warm sensation.
