Acupuncture

Medical Recognition

Though Acupuncture may seem strange to many people, it has received significant validation from the medical industry. Acupuncture is one of the most thoroughly researched and documented of the alternative health care modalilties. A series of controlled studies has shown evidence for the effectiveness of Acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including chronic pain management, fatigue, digestive problems, osteoarthritis, chemotherapy-induced nausea, back pain, asthma, painful menstrual cycles, incontinance, and migraine headaches.

Today, Acupuncture is becoming an integral part of the healthcare system, and is often offered in conjunction with other more traditional therapies. In the U. S., Acupuncture has grown into what is now a common form of pain management therapy in many pain management clinics and hospitals. At least one-third of pain treatment centers within the U. S. provide Acupuncture as a therapy.

Millions of Americans have visited an acupuncturist or have tried Acupuncture for a variety of symptoms.

Acupuncture is gaining rapid acceptance within the medical community, with a growing number of medical schools such as the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA including Acupuncture training in their curriculum. In 2006, this particular program received additional sponsorship through the Stanford School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education.

In November, 1997, the U. S. National Institute of Health (NIH) issued a report titled: "Acupuncture: The NIH Consensus Statement". It stated that Acupuncture is a very useful method for treating many conditions, acknowledging that the possible side effects of Acupuncture are considerably less adverse than when compared to other medical procedures such as surgery or pharmaceuticals. In addition, the NIH made the recommendation to health insurance companies within the U. S. to provide full coverage of Acupuncture treatment for certain conditions. This is a significant advancement in the status of Acupuncture, which has in turn influenced the view of Acupuncture throughout the world. As a result, Acupuncture treatments are now covered by many insurance plans.

In 1997, the Ontario Medical Association officially recognized Acupuncture as a "complimentary medicine." As Acupuncture becomes increasingly accessible to more Canadians, doctors are beginning to recommend it more and more as an effective relief for many medical conditions.
