Where Did Tui Na Originate?
Tui Na dates back to approximately 1700 BC during the Shang Dynasty of China. In his book "Jin Dui Yao Lue," Zhang Zhongjing, a famous physician and Chinese herbalist in the Han Dynasty (206 BC), referred to therapeutic methods practiced today in Tui Na. As the practise of massage continued to develop and flourish, it merged (around 1600 CE) with another technique known as Tui Na, which specialized in bone-setting and musculoskeletal manipulation. Tui Na also became popular for use with chilrdren, with a separate set of methods applied. By approximately 700 CE, Tui Na had developed into a separate study in the Imperial Medical College.
Due to political upheaval in China, in the 1920s and 1930s, the Chinese government instituted a policy to eliminate the branches of Chinese natural medicine, claiming they had lacked scientific foundation. After the Communist revolution in 1949, cheaper forms of healthcare were required to treat millions of Chinese who could not afford western medicine. This led to the reemergence of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a low cost form of treatment for the masses. It was then included as a separate but equal field of educational study in Chinese medical colleges. Tui Na doctors now receive the same length of training as many acupuncturists and herbalists and enjoy the same level of professional respect.
