What Can I Expect During a Treatment?
In a typical treatment session, loose clothing is worn and shoes are removed. Clothing should be comfortable, with top and pants/skirt as separate articles of clothing, allowing the practitioner to easily reach various areas of the body. Occasionally, clothing may be removed to expose an area requiring direct skin contact.
The client then lays on either a table, floor pad, or mat.
Health history is discussed, as well as any treatments underway and any medications currently being taken. Conditions and health problems are discussed, and the practitioner then conducts a physical examination of both the entire body and on any specific condtions being treated. The major focus of application is upon specific pain sites, acupoints, energy meridians, and muscles and joints. Some practitioners may also use Chinese herbs to facilitate quicker healing.
While performing Tui Na, the practitioner focuses their mind, regulates their breathing, and stimulates the flow of vital energy (known as "chi") through their body and into their hands. Chi is then sent into areas of the body where blockages or sluggishness is sensed. In this way, the practitioner provides energy to the client and stimulates the natural healing processes within the client's body. This approach is very similar to the approach used in Quantum Touch.
Treatment sessions range from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Depending on the nature of the problem, additional treatments are often necessary. This is especially the case with chronic conditions.
Tui Na sessions are not considered light and relaxing, and can be quite intense. Sometimes, a significant amount of pressure is required during massage and manipuation which may sometimes be a little rigorous and uncomfortable. It is important to ensure that the practitioner is very knowledgable and experienced. When excessive friction from rubbing or stroking occurs, the practitioner may choose to use talcum power, sesame oil, or a specialized massage lotion or oil developed for Tui Na. As with other energy-focused and Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments, the patient usually feels either calm and relaxed, tired, or energized by the treatment. A subsiding of pain may be experienced during the first session, or may require several sessions to experienced noticeable and lasting results. A Tui Na practitioner may recommend specific self-massage techniques to practice at home in between sessions, and also for general well-being and preventative maintenance.
Clients should wait at least an hour both before undergoing treatment (so that energy is not diverted towards digested) and after undergoing treatment (to allow the body to adjust to the stimulation of energy flow).
Tui Na is not used on external wounds, on areas where there are malignant tumors, or on compound fractures. It should also not be performed on the abdominal region during pregnancy.
