What Are the Benefits?
QiGong encompasses very gentle techniques, it can be performed by people of all ages, including children and the elderly.
Practices can be tailored to the needs of each individual, and QiGong is often used as a complimentary therapy to conventional medicine as an aid to recovery from illness or injury.Conferences in the U. S. and China have been held focused on the ongoing research of QiGong. It has been shown to improve posture and respiration, promote relaxation, cause positive changes in blood chemistry, and improve alertness, self-awareness and concentration. Further research and experimental evidence suggests that QiGong may be beneficial for a wide variety of conditions, including:
| - | Respiratory Conditions |
| (such as asthma and bronchitis by improving gaseous exchange) | |
| - | AIDS |
| - | Arthritis |
| - | Cancer |
| - | Cardiovascular Disease |
| - | Chronic Fatigue |
| - | Fibromyalgia |
| - | Headaches/Migraines |
| - | Heart Disease |
| - | Mental Health |
| (increases alertness, decreases stress, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive behavior) | |
| - | Chronic Pain |
| - | Hemorrhoids |
| - | Constipation |
| - | Diabetes |
| - | Cardiovascular |
| (helping to normalizing high blood pressure and cholesterol level) | |
| - | Prostate |
| - | Immune System |
| - | Circulation |
| - | Musculoskeletal |
| (improving posture, balance, strength, stamina, and flexibility) | |
| - | Brain |
| (improves cerebral flow which may lessen the incidence/probability of stroke) |
Proponents QiGong also feel that it can help correct nearsightedness and farsightedness, as well as improve memory retention.
In 1995 the Journal of the American Medical Association published evidence that Taiji Quan, a form of QiGong, is effective at preventing loss of balance and falling injuries among the elderly. Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine confirmed that Taiji Quan works similarly to aerobics at reducing high blood pressure.
QiGong is also practiced for longevity as it destroys/helps prevent free radicals (a major cause of tissue degeneration within the body) by stimulating a naturally occurring enzyme called superoxide dismutase which protects skin damage from free radicals.QiGong can lead to an increased aesthetic sensitivity to the world around you, especially with nature. Practiced outside in a natural setting, it can lead to a sense of connectedness with the surrounding elements, a newfound understanding of the beauty and vibrance of a flower, or feeling the sense of grounding and timelessness from an oak tree. It can lead to a profound sense of understanding of the nature of reality, and that everything happens in its appropriate time. Such feelings can stimulate our creative abilities through mediums such as art and writing.
